It’s all well and good that Memorial Day is the unofficial start to summer. Here is the question..What’s the sense of celebrating the warmer weather being here if you derail all the work you have done on your body getting ready for this very occasion? #beachseason
Here are some tips to keep you on track
Bring a healthy filler. Lots of cookout menus have a wide variety of splurge items, but often lack healthy stuff, like veggies. If the healthy options are not at your cookout/BBQ then you will fill up on unhealthy items like potato chips and sodas. If you are
hosting make sure you have healthy proteins like hummus, shrimp and grilled chicken strips, and pair it with veggies, whole wheat pita chips and lots of natural juices.
Pick just one starch. The day after the holiday when you feel bloated and your jeans fit a little tighter, refined carbs are usually to blame. You cannot have the potato salad, bread, macaroni and cheese and pasta salad. Choose one and eat a sensible portion size. My suggestion would be to go with corn on the cob. You will feel full and it will take care of your starch cravings.
Stay active. Everyone knows that it is much easier to put on weight than to take it off. Have a balance and participate in some outside activity. Instead of sitting and chatting with friends, walk around while you catch up. Play a game of Frisbee; boys toss a
football to each other; play catch with the kids; or play a game of
twister.
Rely on water. Staying hydrated is important, especially if you’re going to have an alcoholic beverage or two, but it’s also good for weight control. If you drink two cups of water before a meal you will eat less.
Enjoy your Memorial Day celebration but my biggest advice is GRILL not BBQ. Reduce the sugar and unwanted calories with that ONE choice.
